  • 1951 s Black Beauty

I have sent in this coin to ANACS . I believe it to be a Black Beauty OBV&REV . Weight is 4.80 grams . The arrows are pointing to a darker line around the edge of coin . The oldest date of these I could find was a 1958 . nickle errors 1t54 027.jpg

Sorry this is not an example of a black beauty nickel , the Black beauty nickel were found in 1959 issues. Due to poor mixture of the medal as well as how the medal was annealed. As a nickel and variety collector, I know of no other dates where this occurs . Some confusion does occur as some 1964 proofs do tend to tone black and some were also called "black beauty's. The color and texture of the skin on your specimen is no where near the same as a true 1959 Black Beauty nickel. From your images I say environmental damage,or from normal circulation . A nickel of this time period would show the same dark coloring if it passed through a human digestive system due to stomach acid. Had there been other dates other than the 1959 there would be several more reported as the mintage's during this time periods were quite high. The 1951 nickel had a mintage of over 28,500,000 coins.

Thank you for you reply . I was in hopes it was an early date Black Beauty .The line going around the edge where the arrows are pointing was kinda odd . I have sent 5 coins to ANACS for grading and verification and so far I believe I should have done my homework to find more information on them . I am learning though thanks to CONECA forums . I wanted to send Bill Fivaz some coins for attribution service but I never got a reply from my email I sent him . I guess he's busy with Errorrama coming up .

I agree with this being environmental damage -- a dirt coin or similar.

Just got my coins back from ANACS they graded this 1951 S Nickel as Grade 40 with no comment as to why its black in color . I will chalk it up as environmental damage or digestive acid .
