As stated I am more so a variety collector then sets or series . However one series I do enjoy collecting is US Half Dimes both the Capped Bust 1829-1837 & the Seated half dime series. Like I said I tend to lean more towards the variety type coins. So while surfing e bay I ran across a coin that was listed in the CPG as ultra rare! Only 6 known! A 1829 H-10 9/3.
I called a friend of mine as I was away on business and didn't want to make the purchase from a hotel lobby computer .
I told him what I found and asked if he would pull the trigger for me. He confirmed as I did that yes in deed that the coin pictured on e bay was the 1829 9/3 and as stated in the CPG only 6 known!
So he buys the coin and receives it. Images the coin as his pictures shows the coin better than the sellers images did.
After he received the coin we realize that the coin isn't an URS 2-3 or an R-7 variety , it's an LM -3 and no were near a R -7 coin as stated in the cpg!
Now understand I like the coin as it is a variety but not the variety as stated in the cpg. The real kick in the pants is that after visiting my local coin shop today and reading the cpg newest edition it states" this variety is no longer considered an over date of the 9/3, but an Repunched date,Ha! It also states that in the next edition this will be eliminated to assure more space for other CB H-10 variety coins! I will post an image of the cpg page that I used to make the call on this variety .
And allow you to read and discover what one must be aware of trusting any one reference or references . Here are some of the images you tell me what you would of done with this information . 20160907_202318.jpg
