1938-S Jefferson Nickel - Modified Steps, Mint or Post-Mint?

This is an interesting find. A 1938-S Jefferson Nickel with modified steps. Many experts have examined this coin with no clear explanation as to its origin or creation. You can read James Wiles' observations on Variety Vista. This could be the result of a mint engraver taking advantage of a spare San Francisco die, modifying the steps and minting an example? It could have been presented as a prototype for the new step design being explored by the mint. The ultimate new design approved is the Revere 1940 Steps we know today. Or is this the result of a very, very skilled Hobo Nickel artist's work? I'd love to have an article published about this finding. Maybe someone out there knows for sure? What do you think?

I am not sure when I could look at it in person. Maybe this summer when I would have extra time to work on design issues? I'd feel significantly better if there was a second example. Who besides Wiles has seen it?

Good afternoon and Happy New Year.

There have been numerous folks that have weighed in on this example; Bill Fivaz, Bernard Nagengast, Rick Snow and several others prior to when I obtained this example. Maybe I could send you a word document where I have compiled responses and other information?

      Many thanks

Give me some time. I want to wait on going crazy with design changes and re-engraved dies. I will at that time be happy to get that document and look at their conclusions...
