    1983-D (?) Various oddities DDO & DDR

    Hi!

Various things going on with this 1983 cent on obverse (RPM- hard to make out mint, doubling on ‘LIB’, generalized die defects/scratches) & reverse (generalized die defects/scratches, off struck?). I could be wrong however, this appears to be more than just PMDD & deterioration…

    Please advise & TIA!

If this coin doesn’t scream PMD, you should do some research. Buy books. Read the sites. Too many places online to learn from, including this one. This looks like it was ran over in a parking lot

I appreciate your honest feedback- definitely feeling the growing pains.

As a newbie, there’s so much to learn and take in. Every expert starts off as a beginner. Looking forward to the journey.

I think eBay is a double edge sword for the hobby. People see how much some coins go for and have no clue where the premium is. They start looking at their change and think everything they have is something, when its not. Then some coins on eBay arent anything but MD or PMD and they sell for a premium. That hurts the hobby too. Sellers without knowledge to a newbie buyer is all bad.

I suggest learning all you can. Soon youll look back on threads like this one and wonder what you were thinking. Most experts learned before internet so they cant look back on coins they thought were something special when it wasnt, but we all been there. Dont give up. Soak it all in. Keep notes and pictures. Look at all the links posted here for help. Check the education section too

Every once in a while some one New comes along that I can tell has the potential to succeed. You seem to have that focus. It takes time and patience in this hobby. Those that are dedicated to it may even have stepped away from it for a brief period, but they came back because it is in their blood. I say "logic" alot in this hobby because there are very logical reasons and steps that apply to this hobby.

I highly suggest picking a few types of coins, two or three denominations to become very good at. Any more than that, in my opinion and one can become easily distracted and the job at hand will become cluttered. I chose copper Lincoln cents, Morgan Dollars and 1964 Kennedy half dollars.

I don't usually tell many people this, but it does work. when I am need of an RPM or DDO search, I head over to Ebay. I don't buy from anyone that claims to be a dealer or if they sell errors or varieties. I typically look at pawn shops or those seller who do toys, plates, comics clothes and everything in between. Those rolls are probably the cheapest, and they may net a few RPM's. Good rolls to search are 1959-D, 1960-D small date, or large date, 1961-D for starters. Thise rolls won't break the bank and it only takes a few rolls before you hit a good one and pull out some RPM's.

I noticed in the post above you were thinking it may be a Pre-1995 DDR Lincoln memorial. If I have some examples of one handy, I will add a few pics here. This one is a 1964 Proof.

Did you know Chuck Daughtrey drew that picture by hand? Hes a great artist. This is a simple drawing but some of his art is amazing

Yes I knew he did. as a matter of fact a few years ago, circa 2015/16 I was at the largest coin show in Virginia, the VNA. I had just found this a week before that show.

Kevin Flynn walked past and saw the drawing and said, where did you get this? I said, I seen it online and I am using it to educate the people on what is what.

Kevin asked me if I wanted the original and I said sure. I am sure Chuck probably hand drew that for many folks, and somewhere in the safe keeping of the storage that item is in one of the safes. I have copies at shows and people appreciate his insight. I added a few extra lines of text on the drawing because those were the question people asked immediately after looking the drawing over.

If it helps people out, and causes me to type less, I am ALL for that !
