  • 1962 proof or sms penny DDO

I believe I’ve found a doubled die. 1962 maybe proof or SMS. It’s shiny not like a business strike. What do you think? The doubling taking place on LIBERTY, DATE and IN GOD WE TRUST

looks like it is a impaired proof ("a proof coin that grades less than PR-60; a circulated proof.") There is a few DDO's listed for the 1962 proof. Have you tried to match them up? See link below.

I’m leaning towards 1962-DDO-008 and i think it is a proof. I did not see any damage to the coin either. Looks like it was from a set.

The last photos of the date do make it appear to be a doubled die. Proof isn't a term of condition. Proofs are struck with special dies. Once a proof always a proof, even if impaired. Your coin has circulation wear. Regardless, it's a nice find!

I will take it out of the 2x2 and take better pictures. These pictures I took with the plastic so it makes it look like it’s been circulated.

If it's not circulated then where did you find it? Also don't touch it with your bare hands!

There were no SMS coins minted in 1962.
The SMS series started in 1964 with some test coins
The true, "official" SMS sets went from 1965 to 1967.

1962 was good year for doubled dies, both proof and business strikes.

Taking photos of coins out of mylar or plastic sleeves is best. Hold the coin gently a long the edge of the rim, or use white cotton inspection gloves to handle coins that are proof or uncirculated.

Cameras tend to auto focus on the holder and not the coin. I highly suggest taking photos of coins raw when you can, but slabbed coins will Need more time to get a good photo. To keep the phone from taking blurry photos, place a box on the table, put the phone on top of the box. Carefully hang the phone over the edge and focus on the coin on the table. Lightly and carefully tap the button to take a photo. The 2nd link in my signature has photos and step by step process.

I got it from a collection I purchased from someone. I did notice a few sms coin sets and that’s why I initially said it might be a part of a special mint set. It had been in a 2x2 the whole time. I removed it to see if there was any errors and I put it in a new 2x2.

understood. Wikipedia via Google is a good source of initial research for questions like when were SMS sets created. I help people who help themselves. Cuts down on answering people's easy questions.

Thank you very much for your assistance.
should I send it in for grading and if so should I send it to pcgs since it’s listed on varietyvista as a DdO-008?
