I'm curious to see how many IKE Die Variety Collectors are out there.
Check in so we know who you are and give a little synopsis on what you collect.

Personally, I have been very active in the RDV-006 arena but I also have my eye out for PegLegs (clad & silver) of both types, Single Double and Triple Talon Heads as well as the 1972 Types.

Sure Richard! Sorry for the delay as I have been busy elsewhere.

Talon Heads were documented in the ANA Journal (Volume 1, Number 4) for the Winter of 2007. These should be available for purchase from the ANA.

A talon head is a die clash artifact where a portion of the area near the Eagles legs gets transferred to IKE's temple area. That area appears to look like an Eagles Talon or a pointed curl. Some folks refer to this as a Horned Head since some singles a very prominent and nearly impossible to miss. Since the transfer is incuse to the obverse die, its difficult to polish out with out changing Eisehonwers Forehead. The end result looks like this:



During normal production tolerances, a die may move in the minting process and if a second clash occurs, you end up with a double talon which can look like this:



Other Double talons can have the talons completely separated and are referred to as Near Doubles if the space between them is the diameter of a talon or Far Doubles is the space exceeds the diameter (or width) of a talon. Overlapping talons are referred to as Tight Doubles.

A triple talon, which is very rare and of which I do not have a picture, can be tight, near or far.

I just ran across this thread and found it interesting about the talons. What about clashed within the eyes? I have a couple clashed that look like they have an extra upper eye lid.
