CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1970-S Small Date 1c RPM?

I have a 1970 S Lincoln that I believe to be the small date variety which has something going on with the mint mark.

VV doesn't show a RPM for the 70 s small date business strike so I guess that I first would like confirmation that it's in fact a small date.

If confirmed a small then what's up with the MM? With so many of these getting a close look due to the date variety I find it unlikely that an RPM hasn't been seen before.

To my novice eye it looks like a RPM but I'd like to hear what the more experienced have to say. Thanks in advance.

As Occnumis2021 pointed out it is a Large Date, the one example that looks possible is http://www.varietyvista.com/02b%20LC...970SRPM002.htm On VV but the images you provided are not clear enough to say for sure. You have the coin in hand so with a loupe check it against what the link shown , but also look for the die marks as well. Taking pictures off the screen pixelates the images

        Thanks for the feedback.

I feel pretty certain that it's a small date but my original photos didn't provide clear proof. The two date indicators that I look for are to have the tops of the numbers on the same plane and for the front curl of the 9 to point near midway at the 7. This coin meets that in my opinion.

I took new pics and tried to align the date with the grid line for a better perspective. Am I still off thinking that this is a small date? I have access to a better quality vision system at work and can try to capture better photos.

        Thanks,
        John

i didn't specify which one i thought it was. just uploaded the pic for the OP to show the differences. it is pretty obvious which one it is both by the pointed tip of the 9 and the direction it points and the high placement of the 7.

can't help with the RPM part. mintmarks, like other areas of the coins really started having a lot happen to them making it quite a challenge ti differentiate repunching vs everything else.

i will say, when there is NOT a ddo, rpm etc listed for a certain date/mm, the odds of finding the first or next are extremely low. it does happen but it is a very long shot, especially for newer-newish numismatists, partially from the difficulty of learning the differences.

          happy hunting
