1972 P Cent. -009? Mechanical Doubling? Class 3?
WIN_20230508_10_09_11_Pro.jpg Not sure about this one. The closest match seems to be -009, which is not class 3, but it also looks like it could be just machine doubling.

if it is, it will have to be a VLDS because the earlier die states, the doubling on the 2 is just way to pronounced and i don't see any of that from the image. the thing about the later die states is, unless you are very familiar with them and maybe even still then, you will need secondard pups to help confirm the attribution.
i've personally never really been into the myriad 1972 lesser ddos but i do recall one thing, the doubling on the 2 is usually quite obvious for anything but the later die states.
pretty nice image. in the future, you may want to try to get the light to hit the side of the digit/letter of which the doubling/repunching is estimated to be. makes it a little easier on us giving opinions
hope it helps.coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com

The 1972 cent was plagued with many issues. One of them being a master die doubling which affect about half of the 1972 cents minted. The IN GOD IGWT appears doubled, but the Ts in trust are normal, not doubled, just odd looking. The T in LIBERTY almost resembles a hump back T at the top of that T. There is no doubling of LIBERTY, especially in LIB.
The doubled dies are multiple impressions onto the steel working die, so unless it matches pretty close to the photos and areas affected it might simply be a case of machine damage and a master die doubling which is basically worth a cent, since hundreds of millions were made.
Here is an article on the issue.

nice job on the new image. that is precisely what i was referring to and you nailed it. i can't say it looks like any of the others i've seen but if i were you i'd do 2 things. 1. listed to MintErrors 2. comb the 72 p ddo pages for secondary confirmation pups which is a great habit to get into.
happy hunting!

i've used dozens of sites over the years. generally it is the sites with the most amount of diverse, updated and accurate information.coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com

In my opinion, not for me. Others may ponder it for a bit, but in the end there is nothing I see other than mechanical issue which can affect the coin in many ways. New discoveries are slim pickings, they do happen, but are rare. With the number of issues with the 72 cent, one might assume after50 plus years, all ddo varieties would have been discovered by now, since it's one of the four big years for DDOs....1955, 1958 1969 and 1972.Gary Kozera
