Hi ONTREC - It is hard to say from your pictures if the mint mark is inverted. I do know it is a knob tail or ball serif S, which out of the three S mint marks used in 1946, that one is considered scarce. Now, the variety that is rare is this one.
This is th e inverted S mint mark, which is the only inverted mint mark to date, that is found on the entire Lincoln cent series. Hopefully, you will have this one.

Hi Lady120 and welcome to the CONECA forum. It appears that you have a "serif" S mint mark, which is the more common of the S mint marks used for 1944 Lincoln cents. The other used in this year was the "ball serif".
Your mint mark is not inverted and is in the correct position.

Okay... while checking response to previous posts, I took the time to read through some different threads. This one intrigued, so I pulled about 20 1946-S Lincolns from a stash or wheaties and the first one I looked at brought up some questions.
I read the description and viewed your pic of the inverted S and went looking for other references. At http://www.doubleddie.com/58306.html there was what seemed like a pretty good overview. It shows that the trumpet tail as the lowest struck of the three. The example you both give is an inverted ball serif, but is also struck low, like the trumpet tail and which leads me to believe the inverted ball serif is normally a low strike as both pics indicate.
So the question is, what am I looking at in the jpegs I attached? It's not a low mint mark. Just a normal trumpet tail? Can't quite get my head wrapped around this yet. thanks
