CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

Progressive Die Break of 9 Lincoln Cent's minted in Dever, in 1955.

These 9 coins show the gradual deterioration of a Die used in 1955, at the Denver Mint. The Die Break goes from a dot to consuming the gap between the letters B and E in the word Liberty.

I have increased the size of the magnified images so that you can make your own judgement. I am also adding an image of the project I’m working on, only to show that all 9 Lincoln Cents were minted in Denver, back in 1955.

In the 1969 edition of “THE CLASSIFICATION AND VALUE OF ERRORS ON THE LINCOLN CENT” by Jean Cohen, she lists 64 1955D BIE’s. Note, CONECA now has the coins and the copyright for Jean Cohen’s collection. Sorry to say they have never done anything with it. The “BIE Handbook” Edited by Howard O Hardy as published in 1972 has 229 1955D BIE’s. If you’re an ANA member you can check these books from the ANA Library. Both books illustrate the die break and show markers that are present on the coins. To confirm your die breaks are from the same die you need to look at the die markers and check the position of the mint mark.
Of the 64 Cohen listings, 60 are in the # 4 location (B-E), see note below regarding the Hardy Index System. In the “BIE Handbook” 219 are in the # 4 location. While both note a number of progressions, same die, most are from different dies.
The web site Cuds-on-Coins/Broken Die Errors has listings for BIE’s. BIE’s are listed using the Hardy Index System, see the link below.
