  • 1891 MORGAN Dollar O mint Clashed "E"

The E is faint but it's there and noticeable.

In my opinion, the magnification is too high. Plus it's difficult to identify the exact location of this. If I remember correctly the 1891 -O had three clashes. Location is everything. You can match it up at http://vamworld.com.

For people with some experience in attributing or examing coins, the arrows and circles are simply distractions.

I came across it while looking over her voice. As soon as I found it, I bought "The Red Book" and that "E" was right where it says it should be. I can take more pictures.

i'll help you out on this one since chasing "phantom" E's is one of the crummiest vam past times. so many hopes dashed...

you will note your "E" is by eagle tailfeather 1 & 2 whereas the known 91-o bEr clash is by tailfeather 2 & 3.

i see the thing you think looks like an E but there are not any known E clashes of that orientation that i'm aware of but that can be pretty easily verified since there is only a handful of different ones proven in the entire morgan dollar series. hope it helps

there are other diagnostics that can be used like date and mint mark position, other clashing which is probably a lot weaker on your worn coin but imo, for a 91-o any E clash in a coin of that condition should still be very easily identifiable and have seen many in melt buckets filled with morgan and peace dollars.

        happy hunting.

I wish I could use the SD card on my microscope. The only way I can send pictures is by using my phone and taking the pictures. I guess my question is, is there no way possible that this could be a "E" Clashing error? If not, then where would this E come from?

it isnt impossible.you can post the images on vamworld but they will ask you for better ones no doubt. it is part of the vetting process because the pros that designate new listings can simply be overrun by inexperienced coiners thinking every coin they have is something new and amazing and valueable. not being rude, just explaining the waters a bit so if you get resistance, you know why.

THAT being said, there is a guy (quite a fanstastic person from interactions over the many years) that does accept morgans for professional review and possible listing for a fee one a peer review is done on coins like this. if it were unc or at least au and showed a possible E, you'd probably just be able to send it right over.

the odds are very against this being an E clash BUT again, the site is free and you are welcome to vett your coin against the known listings andi i highly recommend you do that. i'd start with known E clash coins and pay attention at the orientation and placement of clashed letters (and other stuff) on the reverse/obverse.

I appreciate that. And I definitely appreciate all everyone's input. I for sure am a novice at this and have very little clue what I am looking at. I do feel this coin has something because I found the letter before I even knew that such an error existed. So again I do thank you for your help
