1868 3 c CN broken die, or?
Hello. Ive got a couple oldies, for you today, a couple 1868 CN 3cent pieces. I thought these two looked different, at the tops of the D of united at least they were different from my 1867, and 1869s, they actually had the complete letter D in united. Is this a broken die, or and/or was it only used in1868? 1869 is the last photo, for "regular" D reference compared with the 1868's. i think i saw in a book, years back, a mention about a broken die, but i could be mistakenYou do not have permission to view this gallery.

The working dies are impressed into metal. With it being impressed it makes sense for the cavity there are the D to be filled with either debris, grease or filings from striking g coins. I doubt it would be an abraided ( over polished die) since there is no other areas that have this effect. In my opinion, it's pretty minor. That's all I got.

Yeah, i didnt think it was much of a big deal, just NONE of the other 3c coins I have seem to be missing the bar, just the 1868's, not 65,66,67,68,70,or 71's that i have, only the 2 68's i have, which was odd so i thought maybe a piece broke off or maybe they forgot to include it maybe trying to strengthen an element elsewhere. i havent read anything about any issues or problems in striking with the 3c cn coin, but it has been oop for quite some time, so if there is information it is old. Thank you for your input,

Thanks , i definitely will be holding onto them, and keeping my eye open for any additional information on the series that i can find. Ive always liked the 2c and 3c coins, but they were always on the more scarce or spendy side, and i think i found 1 if not both, wheat roll hunting sometime in my 40+ years of collecting, and that has offset my cost tremendously! Maybe ill go on ebay and see if any of the other 1868's are like that or not , and make a list of how many of each there are to find percentages or est percentages of coins, if i get bored.
