CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1870 Shied Nickel

Interesting 1870 Shield Nickel variety, I am unsuccessful in finding the exact variety with the obverse and reverse matching the variety.
F-08 matches the reverse and FS-301 is similar but it also has the DDD? on the date and the other DDO only include one to three numbers excluding the 1.
this has all four date numbers doubled.

Any and all responses are welcome.

the images aren't too sharp upon enlarging, that could be from the forum resizing algo tho. (not a fan of it)

it looks like MD to me, partly cuz i see the "doubling" on other devices which does not look like a DD to me and i've seen plenty of ddo/ddr/rpd etc on these but could just be the images which are a little dark as well.

    overall nice presentation tho.

i do have a couple shield nickel discoveries when i was coordinating with howard on numerous occasions but had forgot about them til you posted this, so thanks.

are you using his reference system?

      Hello Numisnerd,
Tony here...To answer your question regarding Hoeard, no I haven't but I am going to.

I adjuster the lighting on original images.
      Hopefully this will help.

I appreciate your response and information.

I have be using Ken Potter, CONECA ( I am a paying member) Error Scope and haven't finished going through all the years.

Variety Plus from NGC (very useful).

      PCGS True View pictures.

I have even emailed Mike Byers, (Great guy by the way, always emails me back soon.) but his specialty is different from this.

ya, i've talked with byers on a few occasions and he has a flare for numismatics. neat error stuff!!

i was hoping for a close-up of the date but if you are working with potter, spindel, etc. there isn't gonna be much more i can do than they can but feel free to share info/images etc.

First, thank you for your response...second I hate spell check...third is I have been collecting since I was only 4 years young in 1964, my first penny was a 1962 D RPM and got bitten by a Black Widow after retrieving the penny...I was in the hospital for days and I didn't ever think about stopping, I still will pick up any coins anywhere and I don't care about what people think, they look at me like I am broke or WTFE !
I have over 3,000+ penny's alone...(1C) and so many other coins I get lost in the thrill of the research for exactly what I have.

I LOVE THIS THRILL OF THE HUNT!

So if you would like to continue with these correspondences, I will be here...I hope...

I have a paperbound version of the Ed Fletcher Shield Nickel book. There are less than 10 examples that show on the date. I don't see an exact match, but it may be due to the slight fuzziness of these photos.

I am not sure what type of setup you are using to take these photos.

If your using a cell phone I use a box on the table vice books. This forum has a photo that saves a thousand words.
