CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

2nd "U" in Pluribus looks doubled.

In my opinion, to me this looks like either a die crack or just a small amount of metal flowed outside the letter. For this much distance, I would believe other letters in that close proximity would show doubling as well. I do not see anything on the other letters.

Http://varietyvista.com has no doubled die obverses or reverses for the 1976 quarter.

In my opinion, i don't see enough from these photos to know what the condition is.

The photos look heavily pixelated, like some one takes a photo from a camera of a monitor. By doing so, the photos in some cases look flat and hard to see details.

Like I said before, there are no documented cases of a 1976 quarter with a DDO or DDR on varietyvista, or conecaonline.info .

That's the dilemma of no documentation of there being one in existence. This one is! The way you described the procedure of the picture being taken is exactly how I took it. I don't have another way to do it.

In my opinin, What you have to realize is, this would not have been the only coin from this working die. There is an average of 325,000 to 1 million quarters per working die. Where were the other coins with this supposed doubled die? I am sure if there was a ddr it would have been found quicker. It has been more than 48 years ago.

I have to believe in what's been documented. I personally cannot see enough in the photos to tell what this issue is. Lighting is the number one pain to good photography. Lighting does ruffle my feathers, even after 40-plus years of doing this.

If you believe it to be a doubled die, you can post it in the Coneca Services forum for the CONECA staff to look at, or you can take a risky chance at sending it in to a third party grading service. Good luck with the decisions and coins.
