73 D Kennedy DDO
Greetings, I have found what i think is a 1973 D DDO Kennedy half dollar, in the mint set i bought for the Eisenhower dollar. I looked at VarietyVista and could not make out which, if any, it could be, for sure. It looked like the DDO-001, at first, but looks the most like the DDO-004, except no doubling other than B. Sorry about photos, and glare, hard to get a great shot thru the govt packaging, and no current ability to take whole coin picture. Any, and all help is appreciated in helping me nail this down. Thanks, in advance. You do not have permission to view this gallery.

Where do you see doubling on this coin ?
The description within each variety vista Kennedy doubled die will list the affected areas. The thing about doubled dies is, the working dies that have the doubling are struck into metal, so they will reproduce the near exact image every time.
From the photos, which tend to get blurry when magnified I think I see something, but it is not conclusive through this batch of photos.Gary Kozera

Hi, yes i knew they produced the exact same image on multiple coins, but what im thinking is maybe its an EDS(less wear?) of one of the ones listed on V V. It looks like it could be the DDO-004 after looking at their photos ,let me grab a few better pics WIN_20230817_05_05_45_Pro.jpg WIN_20230817_05_06_18_Pro.jpg WIN_20230817_05_06_23_Pro.jpg for you. i anything see CLEAR notching AND doubling going on that 7 and letters, just doesnt MATCH anything on V V, so i was directed here by them to see if you could help me square it away, if it IS a DDO, and which number it is, OR if its anew one to get a new V number. thanks

Look at the mint mark position for ddo 004. Variety vista shows a good reference point. It looks like the top of the D mint mark is about even in height with the tip of the neck. Variety vista may not have had a great example to attribute, the areas of doubling look sort of similar.
DDO 004 description says:
Light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST
DDO 001 description says:
Strong spread on all lettering and date
Depends on the magnification used. If it's over 10x they may consider it too minor.Gary Kozera

THANK YOU, it was my thought that it looked MOST like the 004 out of all of them, it just looks , to me that the coin they have pics of is from more worn dies? does notching get flattened out more. the older and more used it gets? like LDS, or do i got it backwards. EDS, MDS and LDS to describe the die state, is it like vision and if you cant see close, you are far sighted? it appears maybe the mint packaging gives horrible glare. im glad some of the other pics were clearer for you to see what was seeing. Another happy find in a set bought for the ikes, and im pretty sure i paid 15-20$ for the 13, coin set, not a bad buy, the ikes are beautiful! im waiting to see if i get the nod to send to Dr.Wiles, as he said he would be pleased ,he said, to inspect and attribute with the coin in hand, and take PROPER pictures, to include in his study of DDO/DDR Kennedy half dollars(im hoping its a die stage not pictured yet)another quickie, is there a die gouge on this R of dollar? if so, possibly could be the DDO-003? The mint mark looks like its in position with DDO-005, . it states in ddo-003 and 004 can be found in mint sets, and no pictures of the 002 ..mint mark, im leaning 3 or 4, OR POSSIBLY, could it be a new DDO? i hope can help figure out which one i have, if thats remains of gouge on leg of R, its an 003? confused. its 004. i think its the EDS that has not been confirmed, maybe? thinking EDS because the clean serif splitting on in god we trust can be seen easily in god , all letters and the B in liberty/ the WE has crazy serif splitting on the E. it is stillin govt pack so the glareis awfulin some shots, sorry

I don't think your half dollar would be the 73D DDO-004. I don't see any doubling except some reflection and glare phantom doubling. Attached are some photos of the 73D DDO-004 stage C form my collection that James Wiles did attribute. Some of the light spread on IN GOD and TRUST, the low mintmark, and a die crack just starting on the bottom of the bust above the left of the W in We.

Yes, i see the lower mint mark on your coin compared with mine, it just stated found in mint sets on the 004 and i think the 003. My guess, they had doubled the image during the hubbing process slightly, producing a slew of DDO dies like happened in 1972 . i see your coin is well circulated, TRUELY hard to spot in any condition, let alone that circulated. ive had a couple people state they thought it was an 003, and i was leaning that direction, until i saw the mint set description, which accounts for MOST of the glare as i have NOT removed or touched them and its still in govt packaging. Heres a few new picsYou do not have permission to view this gallery.

First of all, why did you start this post in the die variety image gallery and not the die variety forum. The 73D DDO-003 can be found in mint sets, and the 73D DDO-004 cannot. The 73DDO-003 is very easy to attribute because of the listed marker. I see that marker on Stages B, C and D in my collection and not on you posted photo. The doubling I show on the 73D DDO-004, IN GOD and TRUST, especially on the bottom of the R in TRUST and G of GOD, is what is on the DDO-004, reference James Wiles attribution of my half, and photos on VV. I don't see that doubling on any of your posted photos. My bottom line is all of your photos you have posted do not show any significant doubling, and don't match the 73D DDO-003 or DDO-004, or anything else in the CONECA Master listings.

kinda what i thought, andi have no idea where to post what, and i thought you posted images in the gallery of variety's listed by Dr Wiles on his site, and he said to put up on here first, but i need to check if it was the half or the.peg leg ike i sent photos to him of that he was curious about. i dont know how to use the keyboard very well, and to be frank, im fairly surprised i figured out how to get my pictures to post! LOL! where am i to post my questions and /or pictures of the coins im dealing with? general forum? most of what i am dealing with is RPM's or OMM ,not DDO or DDR, but i do see them often enough, and im not looking for just anyones answer, but more like answers from collectors like you who know whats what in the series, since they are new to me, but i guess i was under the impression since they were on variety vista they were all varietys. . I didnt notice the different stages and or markers for each stage i guess, and i mustve just saw avail in mint sets, and there were 2 available in mint sets, 50/50 shot right? and if its none of those, it can be an unidentified found object, a ufo in my collection, as i dont sell my coins, just killing time now that the sun has given me cancer, or the DOD, either way i cant go outside much anymore in the daytime, so im just checking things out . please tell me where to post pictures and questions about said pictures, so i can start to figure out how to be a productive voice, and more informed collector, without feeling attacked or stomped down because i dont know the proper answer, that is why i ask, but as far as im concerned, its the uninformed collector who doesnt ask questions that stays uninformed and is more apt to be taken to the cleaners, buying, or lose out giving away valuable coins at grade, not knowing about a variety or error was on it until its too late, like the D mint mark Wisconsin quarters with the leaf errors that we got down here in tucson and green valley, az. When they came out, i had multiples of each, thought they were odd and i shared with friends, only to have all mine stolen in a break in. i cant replace those , or the rush of people looking for the quarters(literally people flying in, to get rolls of quarters to search through, but if they got LUCKY , that $10 roll more than paid for their ticket, because if i remember right, they got expensive real fast, and hard to find once they became known
