  • 1954 S Lincoln mm touching date?

Hello. I have got this 1954S penny, that the mm looks like it is touching the number almost. but there looks like a lower curve of an S mm BELOW the mm. I looked around for this, but i did not see anything about the close mm to number , or an S/S number anywhere. I believe I have multiples of this coin, or HAVE SEEN ones like it, come out and go back into estate rolls purchased years ago, that i still have.. What is this, just a mis-placed mm, or an over mint mark, or nothing? Lol! Ive got to do something to stay out of the sun out in Az, its already given me cancer, they said they got it 60 stitches later they say oops we gotta go back for another bite to the wack of 85 more, over 60 internal. So, i have to find something to keep my sanity and indoors with heat warnings to boot, and over 40 years of collecting to go through and get organized, so my family knows what is here as well. Just in case..so I am sharing some neat coins that i have accumulated and see what anybody else knows or thinks about it before it gets rolled up. On second thought, i like it and think ill just hold it to the side for further date.Thans all.

The US Mint stated that an acceptable placement for the mint mark was in the field below the date.

This "technically" falls with that realm, but there MIGHT be some one out there that collects these. I personally do not believe it will bring in a high premium, due to working dies hammering out close to one million Lincoln cents before retiring the working die. IF it was in UNC condition, and a date/mm that was desirable, you probably could have bought a fancy coffee with it, on a good day.

I have about of a roll of what I call "danger close", mint marks from different years that are extremely close to the date. I don't plan on doing anything with these at the moment. one day I might throw them in a bargain bin and get rid of them for a buck apiece to clear out some room.

On a side note, the weather in Virginia is starting to cool down just a tad, so hopefully it will head your way soon. I cannot tolerate high heat and I hide very well in the summer months. Its OK, from late May to mid-September I get to catch up on projects inside vice out.

He is a few photos that I found on the flash drive, modified for this post. the only thing I see as a marker on the Obverse is a die crack just above the VDB initials.

I cannot see what you are talking about in reference to an additional mint mark punch. There is debris in the way of your coin to make assessment difficult.

Hello, and as always thank you for all the addl information, for the coin at hand. Yeah it is HOT here and it only gets worse during monsoon season, swamp coolers DO NOT work very well in the humid weather. I dont mind not going out in daylight, except im smack in the middle of a full blown restoration and upgrades on my 1968 Camaro, in prep ready for paint, then reassemble all the parts after paint, and its a pain at night, lights in the desert bring out some really nasty little bugs, so i am trying to occupy my time and i just need to focus on one denomination at a time, and right now im just trying to break my collection down by decade, and when i run into odd coins that i cant find on V V, or on wexlers page, i come to the RIGHT PLACE, as you have so far been aces, and totally helpful. Thank YOU again

I think I see what you're rererring to, drawn below, but in addition to the bottom curve of the "S", I see a complete "D" as well. Unfortunately neither of these are the correct size of shape to be secondary mintmarks.

Thanks Ray, I knew if I had something this is the place to inquire about it, and the more i look it seems more like a glob of crud, maybe a tilted rpm, if that. Thank you for helping me determine if i pluck it , or roll it. I think ill keep it for awhile, at least until the next round i go through my stuff, trying to size down, ha! Funny thing about it, the more i "thin it out" the BIGGER my collection seems to get!
