Hi Guys,
I was curious about that before so I just checked. PCGS defines it as having two meanings (1) polishing for proofs (2) polishing to repair coins (whizzing). Originally burnishing was used in the late 18th century for specimen coins.
The U.S. Mint talks about proofs and burnished dies for the West Point mint. Both being polished. They don't specify the difference so I jumped onto Ebay to see the visual differences. Of course there's a major difference between a proof coin and a burnished coin but I can't really see a difference between an UNC. coin and a burnished coin.
So basically I think what their saying is that there is 3 levels of polishing...
Hope that helps.
