CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1916 Buffalo Nickel

Buffalo nickels are my favorite coins. I bought this hoping it might be more than it was being sold as. It appeared to be missing its third feather and the possibility of the DDO made it that much easier to buy. The coin is probably a VF and I fear my pictures are not as clear as you might want. I did upload them as large files. Let me know what you think or if I can improve upon an image. Thank you for your time.

In my opinion, any doubling of the date should be a lot more apparent.

Here is a DDO example on Heritage:

The 001 definately is more apparent with the doubling at the date. I won’t argue there. My question is mine a 002-2-VI+VIII (Variety Vista),which has a much more subtle doubling at the date than the 001, but evident at the feathers braids and face.

i am also curious as to your opinion on the 2 or 3 feathers.

Thank you for taking the time,
      Napa

In my opinion, It's tough to say. It's a well worn coin. I suggest waiting to see if someone else has an opinion. I personally don't collect buffalo nickels, so another opinion on this one would be best.

          DDO-002 at variety vista states....
Description: Medium spread on eye and nose.

That means, the doubling is seen there and unlikely anywhere else.
It's vital to realize that these doubled dies are made of steel and those areas that are doubled in the working dies do not move.

Is there anyone that I can tag that is a Buffalo specialist? I value your opinion, but I believe I have a picture of the nose and I included pictures that coincided with the pictures Variety Vista listed. I did use the pictures that I thought showed doubling in my favor. If you are saying that I should only include a picture of the nose and eyes, I will do that in my future posts. I just figured there would be a reason V.V. added the pictures of other details.

I think Variety Vista does photos of the other areas as a sample of what to expect. some show pick up points or markers, some they just show other areas of the coin for reference, not necessarily places that show doubling.

I pay attention to the description because that is where the attributor says the doubled die is present.

For your info, although I have many decades of experience, I am not a CONECA staff member. In this case, for a second or more opinions, you can add a post under CONECA SERVICES in the Attributions forum. Again, add as much info as you can to get an answer in one reply, which will take a lot less time.
