  • Washingtom Quarter 1972-D / Doubled Die, Die Clash, Wrong Planchet?

    Hello,

New member, first post. Attached is a 1972-D WQ, the coin has signs of corrosion and weighs approx 5.56g. and the rim view shows mostly a copper band. Without magnifiation and lighting it looks dull reddish/gray. Obverse there is obvious doubling "In God We Trust" "Liberty" and "1972". Reverse - obvious doubling " E PLURIBUS UNUM" With magnification and lighting you can see multiple inscriptions in odd location on both sides. There is Multiple strikes of the letter "D" on both Obverse/Reverse. As a new member of the community, any insights into what might have happened to this coin. Could this be a case of a wrong planchet? It almost appears as if someone at the Mint used this coin for practice due to the numerous different inscriptions visible under magnification. Thanks.
