CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

I believe that is a die break. I am not an expert by any means, I could possibly be getting the terminology wrong. Die chip or die break should get you in the right direction if you wanted to research it.

99% sure thats a strike through error. Some piece of debris came between the planchet and die. That coin is really well struck too, and its hard to say from your photos but it looks like it would grade MS63 or better. It can't be a die break as Josh suggested, if it was a die break there would not be any of the design of the number 9 in the effected area, and that part would be raised on the coin not lowered.

i thought it may be a VERY nice die break at first but now i'm in the strike-through camp.

can you get an pic with a lower angle of lighting, so we can see depth.

depth is notoriously difficult to discern from a head on image, even ones as nice as yours. t.i.a.
