    Hello,
I received this coin in change today. It seems to have a lot issues,
I'm just not sure what. Is this a common problem with this type coin?
    Please see photos.

    Thanks

    Hi Patricia,
Your coin is not typical, although it does show some of the problems encountered with a copper plating over a zinc core.

The pock-mark appearance is caused by trapped gas between the two layers. While this is a fairly common problem, your coin seems to have an excess of this feature.

Also, the copper plating has broken down in areas exposing the zinc core (silver colored metal). Over a period of time, the zinc will begin to oxidize, swell and then turn into a powdery white substance.

In other words, this coins life will be foreshortened due to these defects.
