from my experience (and viewing many others results of copper/silver etc) i think it would not be advisable. about the only coin you'd wanna tinker with would be a brown one and still only in specific circumstances to prevent further damage.
i guess a red/red brown, again, only to prevent further damage. generally tinkering with red copper/bronze is not a good idea.
your question is, CAN they. yes, they can but i think i have seen a few instances where they denied putting a coin through restorations (various TPG) for obvious reasons.coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com

The third party grading services do conservation as an ooption, and they can deny to service the coin(s) if they think it will not help the coin. It's usually a flat fee per sheet and I am not sure how many coins can fit on a sheet for conservation. If they have a lot of verdigris, it may help to use distilled water in a sonic cleaner for several cleaning cycles in a row. I would not use any chemicals at all.
You might ask the third party grading service if they will do conservation without slabbing the coin, but with most submissions, the coins should be slabbed.
It's up to the coin owner to accept the risk, cost time and unknown factors when doing conservation to coins whether in house or through a third party.Last edited by MintErrors; 09-14-2024, 12:05 AM.Gary Kozera

Thank you Gary for the good information. At least I have an option!
I can see the coins original tone and it's frustrating when I'm trying to see if they have any diagnostics markings.
The coins look MS65 or better, which makes it worst! Thanks again!!

for naturally toned copper, you just find the right lighting angle and the toning all but disappears, same with proofs/dmpl etc. it is a funny effect tbh.coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com

You are correct! I have a 20x loop and under the grime/film I can see die scratches over the nose, the lines coming down from the A's of America, even the line from the coat to the ER of Liberty on some. The coins are in really good condition. Like I mention, Ms65 or better. I will send one to Restoration and see what feedback I get! Won't know till I try!? Thank you for your time and info!!!

most of them are valuable enough to AT LEAST seek some myriad advice/research before proceeding. i have seen a LOT of folks very unhappy with their restorations. it is more of an art than a science imo. like 70/30 i'd say.coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com

In the blood. It's also an investment. Something to pass the time.
To help out the folks who are curious and are worthy of learning.
For some it's an addiction, a rabid or avid collection of really neat stuff.
Whatever the reason(s), most are quite legitimate and accepted / understood.
I have come full circle in coin collecting. From coins as a kid to memorabilia to coins once again.
One day I may explain my coin travels throughout life.
I am currently burning the midnight oil getting ready to set up at the biggest coin show in Virginia.
After that show and one other, I think i deserve a vacation.Gary Kozera
