    1999 P Jefferson Nickel

It's been some time since I have been here or posted anything so I'm not sure anymore if this is where I should post this. I was going through my Jefferson nickels and came across this 1999 P and I'm not sure if the P is a repunched mint mark or if it's DD (took different pictures of obverse). I have looked in Variety Vista and there is nothing about either. If someone could help me out I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks for your time.

i looked it up and see there aren't any ddo/ddr etc since the 70s except a couple proof issues. (i didn't check other sites that list varieties)

no RPM listed since the 80s

it isn't impossible that one should turn up but is extremely unlikely.

may benefit you to look up machine doubling on coins and then look at some listed varieties as the difference is pretty big once you look at a handful of them.

    happy hunting.

I also looked in Variety Vista and found nothing. As for machine doubling I have seen a lot but nothing anywhere like this. I have seen some RPM's as well and again nothing that looked like this. That is why I thought I'd post here and get peoples opinions. Other then Variety Vista I don't know any other sites to check. Not trying to make more of this then it is or isn't just not sure.

I believe it was 1989 or 1990 when the US Mint added the mintmark to the design, eliminating the repunched mintmarks.

So, there are only two possibilities. It's either worthless doubling like mechanical, flat field, ejection, or many others.

If it was doubled, it would have been a doubled die since it was post 1990. But.... this area around the mintmark is much lower, shelf like and musher and somewhat larger than the primary mintmark. In my opinion, that point it toward some some of worthless doubling.

If the area around the primary mintmark was elevated to the same hieght of the primary mintmark, and there was some other areas that may have that additional raised devices around the coin, it may have been a doubled die.

A good source for nickels is:

A good site with sale items with good photos as well as documented varieties area.

        Happy hunting.
