CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

1982 Lincoln Penny Vertical Bar Left of WE in IN GOD WE TRUST (IWE)

It could be mistaken for an "I"
and is close to the height of the W and vertical. I would post an image here but I am new to CONECA and am having trouble uploading into any forum..
It doesn't seem to be a die chip or doubling. Any suggestions? I would be glad to email an image to anyone who could provide some information or post it.

In my opinion, looking at the rest of the obverse and noting that this may be a zinc cent, it may be gas bubble related. The US Mint had a heck of a time with this for many years.

Do you have any idea how long ago this was slabbed ? What third party grading service did the grading? I am just curious.

Here is an article on the matter.

I submitted it for grading Nov 3, 2024, Finally it was graded in the end of February of 2025. PCGS They graded it under their error service but didn't identify the error. They did not identify others like it. Thanks Gary for responding. It is nice to at least get an idea how it might have been formed and thanks for the link to gas-bubbles.

The reverse side of this cent has a portion flattened as well. A portion of the Word STATES is missing and so is a portion of EPLURBUS.
I've seen versions of flatten portions of STATES on other Lincoln cents. What causes this ?
