Greetings from Maine, USA,
I am retired and a second generation hobby numismatist.
Thank you for having me.
I seek attribution/examination of a recent find pulled from circulation;
The coin is a very dark 1946 no mint mark Jefferson nickel that weighs
4.4 grams. Obviously "underweight" the coin's dimensions appear to be spot on correct.
Is this a wrong planchet error (have seen foreign coins weighing 4.4 grams) or transitional error or some such other in your opinion?
I don't possess XRF or SEM analytical testing equipment to confirm it may be of silver content but then all silver coins produced were
at or about the regular 5.0 grams.
I had a Sigma test done that was inconclusive. I don't feel it is a rare 1946 silver example.
I would be happy to send the coin to you and your colleges for proper examination
and possible attribution.
Thank you for your most valuable time and thoughts and I look forward to your
opinion on this one.
I am not a member at this time.
Respectfully,
Andrew Ferguson
