CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    PCGS; A New Variety Classification

    It does at times seem that the grading companies tend to stick to their own agenda when it comes to grading variety and error coins and at times, this has lead to some mistakes made in labeling the variety or error that has been encapsulated.

    However, it seems that PCGS has decide to add new nomenclature to the variety classifications. A recent slab for a 1972 doubled die (die number unknown) was labeled as a "weak double die". Below is the listing for that coin and the slab that it is in

    It is indeed unfortunate when the supposed top grading company choose to break from the norm and start using their own terminology. I am not to sure what a "weak double die" infers or if it really is a doubled die that they encapsulated.

      Maybe the die state was so late that they could determine that it was doubled but could not determine which doubled die it actually was?

        PCGS uses the Cherry Pickers guides as their only reference, so if it is not in that guide PCGS will list it only as a doubled die / RPM or what ever anomaly that their grades think it is.

        The wording "weak double die" infers that it is not a doubled die since it does not use the correct wording. If I had received this from PCGS, I would have definitely returned this encapsulation and pressed for correct nomenclature on the label.
