CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

1956 D Lincoln Question.........

    I was wondering if this was a removed date and re stamped. As you can see on the 9, there was a 9 inside of it that looks like its been removed. Also, you can barely see it on the picture (looks much better in hand) but you can see the top of the 1 that looks like its been removed next to the 9 and on the 6 you can see the top of it extend past.

    You are describing a repunched date. Repunched dates ended in 1908. It it is a die defect, it's most likely just die damage.

      Hi Gene - As for removing a date and then putting one back on, it is almost impossible to do at the level you are refereing to.

      The only place that you can remove the date is on the hub, either master or working. The only place that you can add a date is on the die, again either master or working.

      I have an article that will be in the next ERRORSCOPE that expalins just how those dates got on the dies and it will explain what you asked in much more detail.
