  • 1996 Quarter with bump

Hi. Forgive me if any info regarding this has been posted already. I searched and couldn't find anything to answer my question. Maybe I just didn't know the right terms to use. Anyway, I have this odd quarter (see picture), I thought it was a CUD situation, but the detail of the eagle is there on the raised part. It looks like the coin was dented from the other side, but the other side is normal. Is this worth anything? Is it special? Or just cool? Just curious. Thanks in advance for any input.

The coin was exposed to a concentrated source of intense heat. It's not an error.

First, since this anomaly is not associated with the rim, it is not called a CUD. CUDS are die breaks that form on the rim with some interior of the die breaking off.

As to your anomaly; since the obverse is not affected, it could be a die dent. The shape is not conducive to it being an interior die break. As to value, while it is a curiosity, it does take the right person who collects this type of error to want it in his or her collection.

        UPDATE

OK, so I have 2 opinions here. I took this coin to a coin shop and got a 3rd different opinion. I decided to do some experimenting to see if I could find the answer. I duplicated this bump. The winner is.............Mike Diamond. Heat did it.

          I have the same coin!

The bump is over the eagles wing, but not in the other side. Same year too! Only difference is the bump on our quarter is larger. It is discolored as though it may have been in a fire or something.

Must be a lot of these floating around...I have one too. The buble on mine is on the face of the coin and is a Maryland 2000 D.
