  • 1994P Silver Eagle grade question

    Hi Guys,

My wife gave this to me as gift I think she may have paid too much. It is in a green box and green velvet display holder/box it does not say US Mint on the box or display holder. She paid $175. ....

My concern is the divot on the reverse and a few small black spots on the obverse (shaded squares) and all the particles in the plastic holder. Additionally what is the best way to remove the floating particles in the holder and off the coin????

    All suggestions are welcome

    thanks
    Ken

    Hi Ken,
First to your coin. It appears to be a proof 1994 silver eagle. The price range for that year is $105.00 for MS-63 to $150.00 for MS-69. So, yes she did overpay a bit, but then again, that does not take into consideration the case that it came in.

As for the divot. This more than likely occurred during the striking of the coin and it would be classified as an error; "struck through a foreign object". However, since it is insignificant in size, there is no added premium. The "black spots" are a different story and are caused by the removal of the frosted area on the coin. These spots are commonly referred to as "bag marks", which are caused by incidental contact with other coins. The presence of these marks does effect the overall grade of a coin. In your case, it would prevent that coin from being a MS-70.

The debris inside the casing is probably paper, which may contain some chemical residue and should be removed. Without seeing the case, it is hard to tell you how to open it.

      Thank you BJ.

I have no problem opening the case, not sure what I should use to get the debris off the coin (air or swiffer).

So the grade of the coin would not be a Proof grade but a "MS grade" ?

      Please advise
      Ken

Air would be best and in this case it would be DCAM (deep cameo), not PR or MS. My mistake in calling it a proof.
