CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    Here is a 1991 Washington quarter with a die chip right at the mintmark which makes the P look somewhat like a butterfly.

    Also notice the overall surface. It was what I was referring to when discussing the 1984 frogskin penny (finding a similar surface on quarters).

    Interesting die chip. The "frog skin" appears to be from circulation wear.

      Another 1991

      Interestingly, I found another 1991 Washington quarter with the same "butterfly" die chip. Now I have a pair.

        The raised blemish to the right of the mintmark could also be a "bleb" (die erosion pit). But the coin is in such bad shape that it's probably impossible to make a determination.
