CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1986 S Designers Initials not complete

This is a 1986 S Kennedy that I have found that the designers Initials aren't complete. As you can see the F is fine but the G looks like a C.

The G looking like a C is probably caused by what is called a grease filled die. This term is a general term however. It could be oil, grease basically any substance that is on the die that fills a void. Always remember that what you see on a coin as raised, is actually the opposite on the die. So in this case the initials would be a valley so to speak. something fills a portion of the valley and presto.. This could also be caused by die polishing from a mint worker.

Hers is a website on how the mint polishes dies.

Thanks my friend. I actually have a dime that there was (ie grease) something liquid on the die or planchet that has left a void in it. Looks cool (60's language lol). Most of I owe you one due to the link. You mentioned a book you first read? Or actually any books you would suggest would be great.
Thanks for your time and trouble.

Well here is the short list

Some are in print, Some are out of print.

Here are the two current basic books for error collectors.

Cherry Pickers Guide I and II
Strike it Rich with Pocket Change Version III

How error coins are made in the US Mints by Arnold Margolis. expensive little book because its out of print but Arnold was always good with writing.

Anything by Alan Herbert! He was the Godfather of Errors. Most of the guys today who are listed as Experts had Alan as their mentor. The guy was a genius in my mind when it came to this portion of the hobby. Even some of his "Official Price Guide to Mint Errors" in my mind are a must have.

Now there are alot of specialty books on certain Series. like right now if you go to www.varietyvista.com who is the keeper of the CONECA files. He has for free 5 ebooks on various series. Buffalo, Mercury, Standing Liberty Quarters, SBA Dollars and Liberty Walking Halves. James Wiles is a great researcher and writer, very easy to read. He has one on the Jefferson Nickel RPM (Repunched Mint Marks) on his site that is very useful.

Go to Amazon.com Type in Error Coin books and break out the credit card!
