CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • CONECA index numbers Question.

When CONE (Collector’s of Numismatic Errors) and NECA (Numismatic Error Collectors of America) joined forces to become CONECA (Combined Numismatic Error Collectors of America) did they start a new indexing system or use one from NECA or CONE?

Did they have an old one? I don't remember anything except the one advanced by Alan Herbert (and owed by him) but maybe there was one. Also, Wexler was listing for CONE using his Wexler File numbers ...

Thanks Ken, do you know was Alan Hebert’s at that time die specific or was it the PDS system which he broke out by division/class.
In researching old Indexing systems I’m still looking for a copy or information on the publication of the pre 1972 edition of the BIE Handbook. None of the old member’s I’ve talked to know if it used the Hardy Index.

2Old, I have all of Alan's files here and I see no reference to a Hardy system. Alan's numbers go like this:

        *SOC-726 1964-D 50 Cents 7/26/72
        OCL-20,430
Howard Hardy of WA shows us a 64-D half dollar with repunched D/D,
        North.

        SOC-726-1 OCL-20,430 Howard Hardy WA 7-26-72

        SOC-1494-2 LM-8 Sam Van Cleave 3/14/75
        II-C-1, E-O1, RPM-2

That is very interesting!! To me it looks like Alan did index die specific and even in 1975 he was using his PDS system, as you know a "II-C-1 is a RPM,

The Hardy Index is only use on LIBERTY Die Breaks on the Lincoln Cent. So it would not be on the 64-D half dollar. Alan had all of these in the II-F Class "BIE" Varieties. I wish I'd gotten into this research before Alan passed. I'm vary happy to see that someone like you has his files. We owe so much to the pioneers in his hobby. I will add this information to my research.

          Thanks,
          JC Stevens
