  • 1970-S overstrike 1941 Canadian quarter

I guess many have heard of the 1970-S Washington quarter overstrike of a 1941 Canadian quarter. Anyone have any idea how this occurred? Is it considered legal? I question the sudden appearance of a number of these overstrikes on E-Bay. One was NGC certified. No value is given for the overstrike by NGC. Several were pricing the coin at $31,000 and $35,000 and one was of great value at $500. I even had a fellow ask me aout the coin as I was waiting in line at the bank. Your thoughts?

There are a number of exotic proof double denomination errors like this from this time period, and none have been confiscated. So I assume they are legal to own. Either that, or the Feds have no interest in pursuing legal action. I have no doubt that the slabbed coin is an intentional error. The other eBay auctions for raw 1970-D quarters were posted by scammers hoping to make a quick buck on the back of the genuine item.
