CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    Newbie questions

    Okay, total newbie at coin collecting and forums, so keep that in mind. We recently inherited a bunch of coins and came across these two, and we were wondering if anyone could explain why the Lincoln looks this way and what might have happened to the 5 in the 1865 coin. Hopefully I can get the attachments to work. Thank for any help!

    The Lincoln cent was altered outside the Mint. The missing digit on the 2-cent piece is probably a "filled die" error. Such errors occur when gunk clogs the corresponding recess in the die face. Such errors are quite common and have minimal value.
