 The intentions of the damaging party are unknown. I don't see any reason why someone would attempt to carve additional D's on the coin, and I think them appearing as such is pareidolia.Wendell Carper

 Its an early year zinc probably. Those are way too small to be "D's", in my opinion. More than likely they are gas bubbles from plating issues that either erupted or the damage on the coin sheered them off. In any event, its post-mint damage (PMD) and holds no additional value
