Bicentennial Quarter
Hey gentlemen procured a 1976 bicentennial Quarter the other day and it looks like someone tried to burn it or something. I don't really know just a guess. But I was wondering if y'all could give me a suggestion on cleaning it up. Now I know your not suppose to clean coins cause it causes them to lose value. But It bothers me just a little bit ..It being my birthday year and everything.... As always thank you for your help.Tags: None

Hummm not sure what to use on burnt coins. There is always the possibility it was slabbed, in a mylar or plastic flip. Some of that may have adhered to the coin surface. An ultrasonic cleaner, with this sole coin in it may work. Now for what type solution to clean silver ? Not sure.
Others have tried hot boiling water and baking soda. I highly recommend doing that combo outside. Boil you water. Find a sturdy non melting container and line the bottom with a piece of aluminum foil. Place coin in container. Add hot water, and depending on size of container 1 to 4 heaping tablespoons of aging soda. When most of the fizzing is done, you can take it out. Rinse the coin off with cold water. Use a piece of bounty towel with a tad of water, and gently rub the coin to see if any addition junk comes off. Rinse once again.
Sometimes the side that is on the foil will remain a little dirtier than the other side. You may have to improvise some sort of way for the coin to stand on edge, so it is not effected as much.
If you plan on trying this be careful and do at your own risk.Last edited by MintErrors; 09-19-2022, 11:30 PM.Gary Kozera
