It's quite authentic. It's an example of clashed dies (die clash, clash marks). The dies banged against each other when a planchet failed to be fed into the striking chamber. This transfers the image of one die to the other. It always requires two press malfunctions -- 1) failure for a planchet to be fed in, and 2) failure for minimum die clearance to be maintained.Mike Diamond. Error coin writer and researcher.

This is normal and expected. Remember that Lincoln's bust is raised on the coin and therefore recessed in the die face. Recessed areas are relatively protected from a clash. The field is the most vulnerable area.Originally posted by GrandpaMike View PostOkay and thanks, I understand, but why are there no clash marks on Lincoln's portrait?Mike Diamond.
