old slabbed Coin with PVC?
Hello every one, I just wanted to ask a question. I have a PCGS MS62 1887 Morgan, i found what I can only assume to be PVC on the reverse, its an old slab some 20 plus years. it even has this one listed as Coin: 35.
My question is should this coin be removed from the slab and cleaned with acetone?Last edited by KiloBay; 01-30-2023, 12:47 PM.Tags: None

If it is already slabbed, it's up to you whether you want to break it out and attempt to get the PVC or whatever it is. There is no guarantee that acetone will remove all of it, so it's a chance and decision you will have to make.
If your planning to resubmit the coin and reslab it, its going to cost some time and money.
If the cost of slabbing the coin once again is close to the price of an already slabbed Morgan with the same grade... it might be beneficial to buy a new Morgan for the money ?
Good luck on whichever path you choose.Gary Kozera

Hello Everyone, my apologies fro the delay. I attached a pic of the slab. and I agree with MintErrors comment its a hard decision but I do recall having this one slabbed along with four other Morgans. Only 3 out of the five certified and the other two rejected due to PVC, and this coin after 20 years or so is showing a green substance. So I am leaning on preserving the artifact, not the slab. I would hate to loss this slab, but I don't think their be a market for slabbed coins showing even the smallest signs of something like this?
Let me know if you would like other photos
Thanks again

My two proverbial cents. Given that the slab isn't collectible itself, and given that you like the coin, I would vote to crack it out and conserve the coin before any PVC damage really starts to eat away at the metal and the coin is beyond saving. You could always enjoy the coin outside of a holder, or if you chose, get it slabbed again, though as was suggested, that would cost money....and perhaps a prohibitive amount.
