Guys see uploaded pictures of a star note that came in my Thomas Jefferson Coinage and Currency Set. I was so surprised!! I was going to send it off to get graded, but my question is do I need to send to them my whole Thomas Jefferson Coinage and Currency set so that the grading service can just remove the two-dollar bill only to grade. Or will I need to remove it from the set and send it in separately? A coin buddy of mine said that I need to send in the set to the grading company and let them remove the two dollar to grade for me. I think that is the right way to do it. Thanks for all of your help. Also, If I wanted the grading service company to take out everything from the coinage and currency set and grade each thing individually, can they do that?

i'd do some research of values and expenses for sending off the note before doing anything with it, including removing it from the set.

there is a neat site(s) where you can look up star notes and/or serials to get you in the ballpark if it is a scarce one or not and also some general auction archive searching will help as well.

Thank you again for helping out a newbie to forums. When you have a moment to spare, would you kindly send that site in a post to me so that I can check it out later. I have a couple of other two - dollar bills that are quite fascinating to me. I think that I had mentioned in my "welcome post" to the forum that I am an avid coin collector and not just of one denomination, but I collect all of the denominations and buy and sell them as well. I also collect antique items, currency and stamps.

P.S. as I was putting away the Thomas Jefferson Coinage and Currency set. I put under my big microscope at home computer the nickel in that currency set and it almost looked like a double die obverse on the front of it. When I investigate it later, I will send a picture of it for the forum community to help me on it.

It's two different services so it requires two different forms more than likely. It's best to call their customer service and also ask them what the TOTAL cost is and average time it will take to get it back. I would not be surprised if it takes more than 7 weeks. You can pay for faster service if the coin or paper money is normal. Any type of error or variety issue may cause the item to go to an outside person, delaying the return, and causing people to pay for a faster service when it's not feasible if not at the third party grading company.

Thank you for sharing the information. I had always wondered what the difference between mechanical doubling, damage and true doubling on a coin was. I will go to the above websites and read them thoroughly. I will also do some research on the subject. Do you believe that a coin can have mechanical doubling on it as well as truly also be a double die at the same time. Also, will the top grading companies recognized it as that and grade the coin accordingly?

yes. happens somewhat regularly and the process for both has nothing to do with the other.

grading has nothing to do with any type of doubling, variety etc. (there may be some exceptions of all the thousands of varieties/errors)

the tpgs would use "attributions/designations etc" for varieties/errors and grading will not affect those unless a coin is severely damaged and/or too low of a condition to properly recognize it.
