CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    2018 P Michigan ATB Quarter DDO-001 with split Reverse rim

    Hi all, I have a question about the reverse rim on this 2018 P Michigan Pictured Rocks DDO Quarter. I see a sort of split rim going from 3 o’clock to 9 o’clock. This is on all of these I have looked at so far. Is this a die defect? There seems to be areas where there is coin metal in the split itself.

    Greetings, as on your other coin with the anomaly along the rim, it could possibly be from several scenarios,

    1. A worn or damaged groove in the upset mill.

    2. Improperly machined grooves

    3. Use of upsetting equipment intended for a different

    denomination (domestic or foreign)

    4. Use of upsetting equipment with grooves of an experimental nature

    5. Circumferential pre-strike damage that resembles the effects of upsetting

    The appearance of abnormal upset is highly variable and suggests many different causes, maybe others can elaborate on this.

      Great Info from ERROR-REF.COM Dutch-Tigger! I enjoy going down those rabbit holes. This Michigan Quarter seems to be more of what PART VI says about Striking Errors and Misaligned dies. I am going to copy/paste this on the 1982 Quarter thread. Thanks alot for the info.

        Hey Thank you OneCent, and yes i have easily swallowed up 4 hours at ER when all I was looking up one thing, then down the tube I went lol, I like the assessment on Part VI, I may not be perfect but try my best as well as learn more along the way.
