West Point Mint (W) 1985D 1C

I find your idea interesting as the West Point mint mark was first used in 1984 according to PCGS. However, I'm struggling to see it on this coin. Usually, the strength of the mint mark should be about the same throughout, but the height you point to inside the D is nowhere near the same as outside the D. The W punch would have had to been at an extreme angle, since the part of the W mint mark to the left of the D would not have been reduced when the D mint mark was punched.
Also, when I look at the W mint mark of the 1984 $10 Olympic Gold Commemoratives or 1986 $5 Statue of Liberty Gold Commemorative I don't see it lining up with the points you indicated.
I hope someone comes up with a way to identify a circulation penny struck at West Point, so keep looking and sharing!
