CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

Greetings, the looks like very bad platting issues witch is common on the Copper platted Zinc pennies, now you say "Fibbers" looks to me as some sore of foreign material added to the coin that hair or other fiber was stuck into the substance added. Nothing in the Minting process would cause hair or a fiber as such to stick to a coin like this, have you tried to soak this coin in 100% Acetone for half a day to see what comes off? 100% Acetone will not harm any metal but is good for removing glue or as I`m thinking Decoupage.
Let us know what happens with a soak please.

I appreciate your answer but I really do not want to ruin the coin, it is the same as cleaning, doesn't it lose its value? I see that those fibers (if you stop the video you may see as I do, a few fibers are behind the letters so I am pretty sure that it is not something added by a person on purpose. You said "Nothing in the Minting process would cause hair or a fiber as such to stick to a coin" Are you sure about that, couldn't a scrape of metal particles get on the coin in the two-part process?

The coin appears to be circulated. Let's think of possibilities. Is there any residue on the coin that might cause fibers to stick to a coin ?

The coin could have been exposed to some sort of chemical or condition which then gave it a sticky surface. Fibers then can easily attach themselves to a coin.

If the adhesive is clear, it can be quite deceiving, often difficult to tell if there is anything on the surface of the coin.

It's your coin, and your decision. No one can guarantee that using 100 % pure acetone will do damage to the coin, especially when we don't know what the gunk on that coin is made of. In my opinion, I believe this was done out side of the U S Mint.

IF this was struck though cloth, fiber or other material inside the mint looks totally different. It has to be incused (sunk or impressed) into the coin, on most occasions

Thank you very much for your time and this information, it is very helpful. God Bless

Update: By the way I did what you suggested (Dutch-Tiger): "100% Acetone will not harm any metal but is good for removing glue or as I`m thinking Decoupage." It was not glue or Decoupage, but it turned what I thought were black fibers into "orange" and the coin looks pretty bad on the parts that already looked bad, now it's worse looking. Well, that's ok... I wanted to put the results here but I did not know how to insert photos. When I have time I will try to do so...
