Since the denticles are still present on the elevated plateau of metal, this would be a retained cud. In other words, this portion of the die broke off, but was still held in place by the collar. As to the cause of the break, it could be related to planchets that are too hard, a die that is too brittle, or both. A cud can appear early in the life of a die or late. It can be preceded by a "pre-cud" die crack or appear suddenly.Mike Diamond. Error coin writer and researcher.
