  • 2000 D KHD - Struck Through Grease

Folks at the coincommunity forums id'd this as struck through grease, which makes sense, but I would still like to know what caused the strange wear lines shown most visibly on the 'TR' of 'TRUST'. Hoping someone has seen these same lines before and attributed them.

Without seeing it under a microsope, I can't speculate on the nature and origin of the "lines". Be that as it may, you need to understand that "grease" is a catch-all term that refers to any sort of gunk that adheres to the die face. Its composition and consistency varies quite a bit. If the "grease" is hard and coarse, it can impart a texture to the coin. If the "grease" is soft and smooth it can preserve the original texture of the unstruck planchet.

Thanks Mike - that helps. Explains why the surface effect is not smooth like I would imagine grease to be as well.
