Mint error or post mint damage?

Can someone respond with thoughts on this being a possible mint error? A thin planchet or mis aligned die? To me it looks like one area of the coin did not strike up fully Vs the possibility of unusual equal wear in the same area on both sides of the coin. Thanks

Mint error or post mint damage?
This is likely a 1940 S Mercury dime. The zero and part of the 4 are missing on the obverse and there's something unusual about the rim of the coin near the affected area. The reverse of the coin has similar problems in the same position. The rest of the coin is not too worn out and looks quite normal... I have seen coins struck through grease that had obscured numbers or letters but that was only on one side of the coin. Your thoughts & comments appreciated.
