CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1941 Mercury Dime error Identification Help

Ok this is a weird one. I’ve had this dime my whole life and I can’t figure out what exactly happened here. There is doubling on the R T Y and the date, it’s off center and there are faint traces of doubling on the L I B and E as well. Any help is appreciated. I just want to know what to call this Frankenstein. Thanks in advance. First post by the way! Cheers!

    Welcome aboard.

In my opinion, going out on a limb...A S.W.A.G. if you will.

It looks like a partial collar. The collar grips the blank planchet when the dies strike it into a coin. The collar also helps form the edge reeding on dimes, quarters, half dollars and some dollars.

How does the reeding (thin side of the coin) look on this coin ?

I think this coin could have been damaged as well. It appears to be not completely round, it could have been stuck in a coin counter, vending machine, or other mechanical device and some damage to the rim occurred. It's tough to say exactly what happened to it.
