1974 Kennedy Half Dollar Mint Error
Hello! I need some help identifying this error. I do not believe this to be PMD. Note the retained metal still attached to this coin. What is this error called? Would it be a type of retained strike through error or more of a defective planchet issue? How does this occur in the minting process and how rare are these types of errors? Thank you so much in advance!

this looks perhaps like a strike-through but my gut is tellin me it is PMD from the grainy images.coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com

Thank you for your feedback. The reason I don’t believe this is pmd is because usually when see an area on a coin like this you see the metal rolled up on both sides of the scratch indicating something damaged the coin. Here this is not the case. There’s no rolled metal on either side. I believe you are right, this is a retained strike through. I appreciate your assistance with this!

part of providing qulaity images comes in post-processing. you gotta know how to zoom and crop.
with stuff like this head-on images AND angled images are best. (i JUST now seen the low-flat angled image)
i say this to encourage you, the iphone12 shoudl be provided MUCH better images than this, which is good cuz it means your device is more than good enough, now you just gotta increase your experience/results.
for instance my iphone6s will do much better than these images but i gotta tinker with lightly quanity/brightness,angles/distance etc. best to set the camera on a stack of books or something with the light being higher than the camera. (there are exceptions)
i'm really thinking this is just pmd and the metal at the top there that is higher than the coin came from the gouge(s) right below/before.
i think there is a strong chance that a knife or sometjhing with a sharper edge cut into the coin and that metal was pushed up.
i'll say, i'm 98% certain this is PMD and 2% uncertain cuz while your images are pretty decent, i just can't be absolutely certain from them. maybe someone else can/will speak more confidently than i?coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com
