2023 Penny with an Obverse Die Clash
I found this in pocket change a couple of days ago. I was wonder if there has been many of these found, or it is maybe a low number of discoveries.
Thank you in advance for any information some of you might have on this particular penny.Tags: None

It looks like a clash - and a relatively rare version. The US Mint usually has protections in place to avoid this.
There is a website called https://maddieclashes.com that might have this example documented. If they do not, they may ask for photos and give you credit for the photos. That does not mean it's a discovery piece, that's way more complicated, in my opinion.Gary Kozera

wow, that IS a nice one!
for my part i cannot comment officially about rarity since they make billions of these things but it sure don't seem common to me.
that letter transfer is great and by the date, i'm gonna go look for one and i cannot wait. Thank you all for the replies and the info. I have looked at hundreds of 2023's and had never seen this one before. Mad Die Clashes has a message that they are not accepting new submissions, so I will hang on to this one and see what else I can find out about it.

They prolly have an email and still occasionally take submissions. IF they have a known email or contact info on their site, one may try to contact them, send them a link to this post and take it from there. Some people forget to take down those sort of messages on their websites on occasion. All they can do is say no thanks.
In my opinion, mint errors are pretty uncommon from 2003 to date. Since its frowned upon to talk about value and condition of coins on this forum, all I can say is that I would not be surprised if the drama indicator on this coin would peak near 4-6 out of 10. The only reason this escaped the mint is due to the coin being nearly perfect in diameter and looking like a normal coin. Since people are looking for major errors in rolls and not finding anything, newer collectors may have to shift their focus on items like this in order to satisfy the collectible habit.
Clashes typically don't last long. they either fade over time or the working die is removed and gets abraded or simply thrown away and replaced. The mint now has "inspection stations" where a handful of coins are inspected from a vat of coins. If the inspector find something, they more than likely hit a button and that batch is simply send to a cart for destruction - all of them in the vat..... Sure, its difficult to determine how many of these may be out there, but the fact is, there might be more.
Where region of the USA did you find this coin ?
I have not seen a good clash in a long time and when people are roll searching and can gain a slight bit of hope that there is something like this out there, it keeps the hope that there is a bell ringer out there that is relatively new.Last edited by MintErrors; 12-10-2024, 04:24 AM.Gary Kozera

Ok, it very well may be regional, one never knows for sure. I will let my customers and friends know that this does exist out there. Soon people in FL, GA, SC, NC and VA will be occasionally looking for this clash. We might be able to see if it is wide spread or at one specific region.
Congrats on the find, its something impressive in these times.Gary Kozera
