    1938D Jefferson

Looking through some uncirculated 1938D Jefferson nickels I found this. Could someone confirm this is a lamination error? The attached photos show; the defect on the back of the coin, the edge of the coin where the rim is slightly affected, and the front of the coin (no defect, ref only). Thanks for your thoughts.

i'd call it more an improper metal mixture than a lamination/delamination error. those generally have a piece(s) separating from the coin, although sometimes you find a coin kinda like this but the piece(s) has already detached. there are some other terms applied to these but they aren't coming to me just now.

i would link an error-ref page or two but the site is giving a critical error notification to me just now.

In my opinion, it's a good idea to take photos out of the holder unless the camera is on manual focus. The auto focus cameras will detect the holder or clear film and focus on that, not the coin. It will also reduce or possibly eliminate any glare.

With all respect due to occnumis2021 and he deserves alot of it, it could be either one. Improper mix or a lamination. I will look really close to see if the issue existed pre strike and sure it could be a defective planchet.

Thanks guys! I like the "improper metal mixture" theory and will read up on it. I have some lamination examples from the war years and they are a bit different than this. I will keep them side by side in my book. It's nice to find an abnormality on an uncirculated coin! Most of the errors I find are from the more well worn side of the track.
