IMG_4735.jpg IMG_4734.jpg IMG_4736.jpg IMG_4737.jpg It doesn’t have the die marker for Stage B, but from what I can tell, there are only two SMS DDRs listed on Variety Vista — and this one looks significantly more doubled than DDR-005.

The description of FS 801 reads:
Description: Light spread on both stems, lower leaves, and QUARTER DOLLAR.
In my opinion :
That should be the target area. Exactly what "light spread" can be open to interpretation. All the other photos on a reseach website can distract/confuse people believing that all of them can have doubling on them which is not the case.
Proof working dies typically did not do a lot of strikes compared to a business strike working die. I believe that ie deterioration would not happen to most proof and possibly SMS coins, as the working dies dont get to strike enough coins to get to a late die stage.
The typical business strike working dies average about 325,000 coins. At the moment, i dont have access to my reference on how many SMS quarters were minted nor the number or working dies that were used. A quick search of the number of minted sms quarters in 1967 was 1.8 million.
I believe the northern part of your coin may suffer from some sort of worthless doubling. Typically PROOFS are struck more than once to bring out the best of the device elements. It probably applies to SMS struck coins as well. If the planchet or working dies move just a touch berween strikes, this is the end result.Last edited by MintErrors; 06-21-2025, 02:25 AM.
